The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) handed over household utilities, disinfectants, and equipment for storm and flood tracing to flood-hit people in the Central provinces of Vietnam.
These supplies are part of the UNDP’s emergency assistance of US$ 400,000 to storm- and flood-affected people, the poor, near poor, and women in need in the five most affected provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai.
The UNDP’s initial support includes 800 household utilities, 30 tons of disinfectant, five sets of equipment for floods and storm tracing, and funds to repair 300 damaged houses. The UNDP is expecting to mobilize another USD 1 million for emergency response and recovery efforts.
According to Ms. Caitlin Wiesen, the UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam, many people have lost almost all of their household property to the floodwaters, and many others have become homeless. Poor and near-poor people will not have money for house repairs, reconstruction, or purchasing necessities.
"Now more than ever, affected people, especially the poor, near poor, women and girls are in urgent need of housing repairs and receiving vital supplies to stabilize their lives” said Ms. Caitlin Wiesen.
Household utilities, including kitchenware, blankets and mosquito nets, personal protective devices and disinfectants are all essential for people to protect their health and soon stabilize their lives.
