Quang Nam province, 16 March 2018 - Mr. Dinh Van Thu, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee of Quang Nam, Ms. Akiko Fujii, Deputy Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ms Doan Thi Tuyet Nga, Deputy National Project Director, and Director of International Cooperation Department of Viet Nam Disaster Management Authority (VNDMA), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, agreed to accelerate the implementation of the GCF-UNDP project entitled “Improving the Resilience of Vulnerable Coastal Communities to Climate Change Related Impacts in Viet Nam.”
This is Viet Nam’s first project funded by the Green Climate Fund, entitled “Improving the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities to climate change related impacts in Viet Nam” (2017-2022), with a total grant of 29 million USD. Prime Minister approved the project at the Decision No. 1029 / QD-TTg of July 13, 2017, and assign the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Construction to implement the project in seven provinces of Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Ca Mau.
The project has strong ownership and is built on the on-going resilient housing and mangrove forest programmes of the Government of Viet Nam.
Quang Nam province participates in all three components of the project, and aims to build 50 resilient houses in 6 districts in 2018, and build 243 houses, plants and regenerates 135 ha of mangrove forest in the next five years.
“We highly value the strong ownership of Quang Nam People’s Committee over the project. I am pleased to see the province’s leadership in ensuring the timely mangrove planting at the right time of the year.” Ms Fujii said at the meeting. It is also important to complete the construction of resilient housing well before the next typhoon season.
As it is among the first GCF’s projects globally, the world is watching the implementation progress in Viet Nam and in Quang Nam province in particular.
Mr Dinh Van Thu, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee express sincere thanks to GCF and UNDP for the support and said the project would “bring great benefit for the poor and vulnerable people in the participating province. Quang Nam is one of the coastal provinces highly affected by disasters and climate change”.
